Gary "Snakeman" Pollard

Here in the Buccaneer it is rather common to attach nick names to people you care about who have special talents. One such person is Gary "Snakeman" Pollard. Gary has been a full time resident at 738 Pirates Rest Road for 13 years. During that time, he has been the "Go-To" guy here in the Buccaneer that residents call when they see dangerous snakes. Gary has designed a snare so that he really doesn't have to get within close striking distance of the snakes. And it works perfectly.

The first time I encountered Gary with a snake was 7 years ago. There was a lot of noise about a big Diamond Back Rattlesnake causing trouble in the outback area by the compound. Sure enough, there was Gary, cast on his hand and all, with the snake. Jerry Jaromin and Phil Brown helped him skin it out. He kept the skin and Jerry and Phil had a Rattlesnake dinner.

Over the past 7 years, Gary has nailed several dangerous snakes. He captured a 5'5" Cottonmouth Water Moccasin a couple of years ago that came after him as he was trying to catch it. Last summer  Zeke DeHollander and Gary caught a 6'4" Diamond Back Rattlesnake in the Buccaneer Residential Area that had a 12.5" girth when skinned out. Zeke now have the skin from this critter over their bed.

The most recent Diamond Back Rattlesnake was just under 5' long. This particular one was captured as it was trying to swallow a full-grown Rabbit in a Residential Area. They somehow unhinge their jaw to get everything in at once.

The fangs are real sharp and can generate enough venom to kill anyone without quick treatment. Of course there are other snakes around in this area too. But since these are the only ones we have photos of, you will have to look the other ones on the Internet.

Now you may think all of these snakes look alike, but each one has it's own story. Check with Gary the next time you see him about each story. Gary is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to capture any nuisance snakes you may find that you are afraid of here in the Buccaneer.
