GOLFER'S CORNER

Golf Tips

Are you losing your grip?  Check Your glove.

If you seem to be loosening your grip at the top of your swing, try changing to a slightly larger glove size. A glove that fits too snugly may force you to let go at the very top of the swing. If you have tried other ways of correcting this fault without success, this might be the answer.

Practice putting by putting it through the wickets.

Place two tees into the green about three inches apart and along the line of a four-foot putt. Place the ball about four inches from the opening. Stroke the putt so that the ball passes through the two tees and so your putter face touches both tees as you follow through. You will develop a solid, accelerating stroke.

Having trouble finding the correct brakes of putts?  Let your feet do the walking.

When lining up a putt that may have some tricky or subtle breaks, walk the line just outside of the actual line. Your feet should give you a feel for the slopes along the line.

Once over the ball, Think BRASS only.

As you prepare to hit a shot avoid thinking about mechanics. Instead use BRASS: B--breathe, take a long slow inhale and exhale; R--relax, aim and look once at your target; S--sight, focus on the back of the ball; and S--swing smoothly.

To hit the big drive when you need one, think, "sweep and pull."

When you really need to hit a long drive try sweeping the club back as low and slow as possible. At the top of your swing, move onto your left side and feel as if you are pulling your hands down into the ball.

Break out of the slicer's dilemma.

Golfers who slice tend to open their stance and aim to the left of the target to allow for it. You can break out of the slicer's rut by doing just the opposite. Close your stance and aim slightly to the right of the target for an inside-out swing.

Don't let cross-cut greens cross you up.

If your greens are cut so that stripes appear from dark and shiny paths of grass, be careful as to what the ball will do. The shiny grass indicates that the grain has been pointed in the direction facing away from you; the dark grass is grain against you. Look carefully at the grain near the hole as this will have the greatest impact on the break of the putt.
