Golf Trivia Definiations:

1858 - the year of the first recorded hole-in-1 by young Tommy Morris during the Open Championship at Preswick. He won 4 consecutive British Open's; a feat that has never been equaled.

Jack Nicklaus' first pro pay cheque came in 1962 at the L.A. Open. He finished tied for 50th. The cheque was for $33.33.

Laura Davies once won a long-driving competition by outhitting 40 men. Her winning shot measured 312 yards.

Caveman - Pro's term for shooting 90+ (otherwise called a great game by Duffers).

The first round of golf in the U.S. occurred on February 22, 1888, on a pasture next to the home of John Reid in Yonkers New York. Beid and three others played a three hole layout with just six clubs between them.

Snowman - Slang used by pro's for shooting 80+.

The average score for men over the last 100 years is 97.

The First US Open championship was held in 1895.

A set of 4 clubs, a golf bag and six balls cost $17.50 in 1922. Sold separately, they cost $20.50. The clubs included a driver or Brassie for $4.00; a Mashie for $3.50; a Mid-iron for $3.50; Putter for $3.50; Bag for $3.00 and 6 balls for $3.00.

Arnold Palmer, in 1958, led the PGA Tour by winning $42,000.

World's longest course - par 77, 8,325 yds International Golf club, Bolton, Mass.

Margaret Abbott was THE ONLY WOMAN GOLFER to win an Olympic gold medal.

Golf was introduced as an Olympic sport at the 1900 Olympics in Paris. Women golfers from the United States and France competed in the 9-hole event. American Margaret Abbott shot a 47 to win the gold medal by two shots. Some of the French women had never played golf and wore high heels and tight skirts. Women's golf was discontinued in the Olympics after 1900.


Spiro Agnew was THE ONLY GOLFER to hit three spectators with his first two tee shots in a tournament.

Vice President Spiro Agnew was invited to play in the Pro-Am portion of the 1971 Bob Hope Desert Classic in Palm Springs, California. After hitting three spectators with his first two tee shots, Agnew decided, in the interest of public safety, to put his clubs away for the day.
